Introducing the Challenge

Starting Point

Establishment Labs is a medical company with Costa Rican origins. In its development area, it is dedicated to improving women's health, providing solutions for breast reconstruction, aesthetics, and more.

Due to its importance in the medical sector and in Costa Rica, it decided to build a new building called “Sulàyöm Innovation Campus” dedicated to R&D and media production, with its opening celebrated on July 19, 2023.

What is the Challenge?

Due to the opening of this new building, Establishment Labs wants to have an interactive map of the building, showing its most important sites and the activities to be performed there.

From Idea to Interactive

Interactive

For its design, there were several meetings with the stakeholders to present a graphic style that they not only approved but also aligned with the theme of the “Sulàyöm Innovation Campus” building (Sulàyöm being an indigenous Costa Rican word meaning “the epicenter of creation”).

Installation

The interactive map is located in the main lobby of the building, used by visitors as a meeting point and starting point for places they can visit and consult.

Lessons Learned

What went wrong?

During the creation of the information architecture and subsequent prototyping, specifically for the staff members, a possible scenario emerged that could solve almost all the problems of this user segment. However, it was not already mapped within the client's delivery or agreed upon for development.

We proceeded to meet with the client and negotiate the extra development, ending in an agreement for a later stage, limiting the development scope to an MVP

What went well?

Communication within the team was crucial to understanding not only the scope or design proposed and desired but also to understanding how the devs work and what we could propose as our extra work that the Project Manager allowed us to take on.
